Australian equities rose in March in local currency terms, helped by positive U.S. economic data and a run-up in
banking stocks despite the lack of sector-specific news.
The central bank kept interest rates unchanged. Manufacturing output contracted for the first time in four months,
while consumer confidence continued to fall, as unemployment rate rose marginally in February.
In politics, Prime Minister Julia Gillard reshuffled the cabinet and appointed New South Wales’ former premier, Bob
Carr, as foreign minister, replacing Kevin Rudd.
Miner Rio Tinto may sell off its diamond business following a strategic review, as it lacks scale and contributed
marginally to the group’s earnings last year. Miners from BHP Billiton’s Queensland coal mines resumed their strike
after negotiations broke down between management and labor unions.
There were no major changes to the portfolio in March.
